Main Star - Shantytown Report

Shantytown
On the 29th of October a class of students from Grey Main School Mamaku 1 went on a day trip to Shantytown. There were many extremely excited children getting ready and putting suncream on outside the old site.

When they had gotten inside they went to the old church until they were told “You are going to the old school to get changed”. All the children were waiting in line to get their clothes and get changed into old fashioned boys and girls clothes.

Once they came out the boys learnt it was polite that if you ever walked past a lady or a girl you tip your hat so throughout the rest of the day the boys were tipping their hats.

A day out at Shantytown offers children a look into the past so they can experience how it was like in the old days, it is highly recommendable and enjoyable.

Main Star - Plan

This my Main Star on what I'm going to do to keep my room tidy. I hope you like it!

Main Star - Basic Facts

Basic Facts

For this Main Star we had to practise basic facts using two different methods. I practised all the times tables up to 12x for two weeks.Image result for all times tables up to 12
Each day I looked at the questions and answered them using a few different methods on each of them.

Conclusion:

I now know a lot more times tables than I used to and I think this was an awesome Main Star to help with Basic Facts.

Survivor

Survivor

This week we have been doing challenges and activities to do with survival.

Today our group (Kaha) did a challenge against another group. We had to take turns with going to a bucket with a cup, and filling up a container to the top.

The first group to fill to the top won, our group won because the other team got disqualified.

Shantytown

Shantytown

On the 29th of November the year 5's from M1 and M3 went on a trip to shantytown. Everyone had to wear old boys and girls clothes and we did lots of fun activities. The first thing we did was get changed into the clothes we had to wear, at the old school.

We then had a break and some food, then we learned about the incident that happened to George Dobson. We then went to a holographic theatre and learned more about it. Once we had learned about that we got a train ride to different stops and got to look around.

For this Main Star we had to donate something to people in need. So I donated a bunch of my old clothes (that was still good to use) to an op shop named Vinnies.

A lot of our families old clothes has gone to Vinnies. Below you can see a photo of me outside the op shop holding a bag with my clothes in.

You can also buy lots of cool second hand things there like books, clothes and stuffed animals.

Managing Self - Litter

Litter
Let’s keep our school litter free and show others how we care for our environment.

If you are not using plastic bags to take home for your supermarket shopping or your wet togs from swimming, YOU are doing the environment a huge favour! Wrap your sandwiches in a reusable sandwich wrap or any kind of reusable container then you won’t have rubbish to throw away!

Ways to help:
  • Say no to the plastic bags at the supermarket or when you are shopping!
  • Take your own recycled bags and use them again and again! (Just wash them once in awhile)
  • I recommend to watch this trailer about litter and rubbish. I'm going to watch the movie with my family>>> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zrn4-FfbXw
  • I would really like to hear your comments on your thoughts about the above linked video!

Participating And Contributing - Letter To Editor

Letter To Editor

(Source Greymouth Star 21/09/2017)

Why do tourists think they can just come to Aotearoa New Zealand and take things that don’t belong to them and do stupid things like, cross a lake in an overloaded kayak without life jackets? That is putting their lives in danger and the person who might attempt to save their life in danger.

Issues:
  • The tourists took the kayak without permission.
  • Overloading the kayak and not wearing any safety gear.

This type of behaviour is unacceptable and makes me quite annoyed and angry. If any of this type of bad behaviour were to happen again, I think they should be heavily fined.

Managing Self-Improve Your Fitness

Fitness

For this main star I had to improve my fitness over a 4 week period and I chose biking. Each day I had to bike a certain amount around our block and our block is approximately ½ a kilometre. I started by biking around the block twice so I was biking approximately 1 kilometre. Also every week I would improve my distance by 2 blocks which is approximately 2 kilometres, so in the end I would be biking 8 blocks a day. Below is the graph
At the moment I am also doing pull ups over a 4 week period, and each week I have to improve my amount by 5 pull ups. I am doing these pull ups to improve my upper body strength for swimming. Also I am starting on 10 pull ups a day, that means I will end with doing 25 pull ups a day.

To the left is Colonel John McCrae.

Here is a poem John McCrae Wrote about Poppies:

Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Own Creation (Key Com #2)

Homemade Stress Balls.

To the Left is a picture of the stress ball I made.

What you need to make it is:

Balloons
A bunch of flower
A bottle
A funnel
A pair of scissors
Optional: Glue, More balloons.

How to Make the stress ball

1. Start by putting the funnel in the bottle and putting flour into the funnel so it goes into the bottle.
2. Fill the bottle up about a 6th of the way depending on the size of the bottle, to the left is a picture of the bottle I was using it's a 1 litre bottle.
3. Put the balloon over the neck of the bottle and put all the flour into the balloon.
4. Now cut the neck of the balloon completely off and cut the neck off of another balloon and wrap it around the balloon with the flour in it. Wrap one more balloon around it and now we make the cool outside of the stress ball.
5. Get your last balloon and cut the neck off of it now cut more holes in it by folding it and cutting a semi circle, then open it up and you have a full hole. once you have at least six holes in the balloon then wrap it around your stress ball and there you have it. The finished stress ball.

I picked this project because I like making things you can use, for example you can use the stress ball to help you relax.
