Don't Subtract, Add!

Don’t Subtract Add!

The don’t subtract add technique is used for large subtraction
questions. It is when you turn the number around and
count up to the bigger number e.g.

479 - 357 = ?

You flip the number around so the bigger
number is at the end and then you count from
the smaller number up to the bigger number e.g.

357 + Mystery Number = 479

And the mystery number is the answer

An easy way to count up to the bigger number is by first
counting up to the first clean number e.g.

357 + 3 = 360

Then up to the next and so on

360 + 40 = 400

400 + 70 = 470

470 + 9 = 479

And in the end you add up all the numbers in the middle

3 + 40 = 43

43 + 70 = 113

113 + 9 = 122

And so the answer is 122

Science Fair Project

This week we had a Science Fair where we had to create a seed dispersal poster to explain whether certain plants are dispersed by exploding, moved by water, by wind, catching a ride or eaten by an animal.

Our actual science experiment was what liquid worked better to grow a plant between oil, water or milk (the water ended up working best.)

• Emil is a Cruise Ship drifting through the water and lit up by the night sky

• Emil is a fresh and newly made ham and cheese sandwich ready to be eaten with a mouthful of flavour

Most Funny Moment

My most funny moment was when I accidentally left my camera on overnight and when I took it out to take a picture of an amazing waterfall it went flat when my finger was on the button!! :(

Most Memorable Moment

My most memorable moment was when we went to the devils Punch Bowl waterfall and I took some picture of my friends drinking out of the waterfall. :D

Most Challenging Moment

My most challenging moment was when I did the river crossing through the freezing cold water. :O

Main Star - Shantytown Report

Shantytown

On the 29th of October a class of students from Grey Main School Mamaku 1 went on a day trip to Shantytown. There were many extremely excited children getting ready and putting suncream on outside the old site.

When they had gotten inside they went to the old church until they were told “You are going to the old school to get changed”. All the children were waiting in line to get their clothes and get changed into old fashioned boys and girls clothes.

Once they came out the boys learnt it was polite that if you ever walked past a lady or a girl you tip your hat so throughout the rest of the day the boys were tipping their hats.

A day out at Shantytown offers children a look into the past so they can experience how it was like in the old days, it is highly recommendable and enjoyable.
